Rev Josam Kariuki helping... Since August 2006 he has dewormed 85,000 Children. His vision is to deworm and give Multi-vitamins to 120,000 needy - children in Nakuru District through a mobile clinics he conducts every - saturday in different villages and slums. His dedication in this demanding Program has won recognation and support by Ministry of Health, Local and Inter-National Media.
Having opened in February 2004, this clinic was originally started by one nurse and a receptionist but has grown in size and in number of patients.
The clinic serves approximate 250,000 poor and needy communities in Nakuru. Most of the patients are so poor and very needy, and many are orphans as a result of HIV/AIDS. Medicines, when available, are dispensed free at the clinic, as most people cannot afford the high cost medicine in Kenya, instead staying at home to wait death. Before the clinic opened doors in this village children were not vaccinated, even against common childhood diseases. There was no prenatal, maternity, post-partum or well-baby care available. There was no emergency services, and the nearest comprehensive health-care facility is 20 miles away. Every year at least 18 women died in childbirth, and an average of 60 children below 5 years of age died each year as result of preventable diseases.
Today the clinic is a source of hope to many families especially children and women.
The clinic offers the following services:-
-Children Immunization
- Well-baby care
-Curative
-Pre-Natal services
-Family Planning
-Maternity Services
-Dental Services
-Prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV/AIDS
-Counseling and HIV/AIDS testing
-Laboratory testing
-Pap Smear testing
-Ultra sound diagnosis
The clinic has an on-going de-worming program, with Rev. Josam and other health care workers going throughout the District to administer the medication. From April, 2006 through July, 2007 over 82,400 children in the district have been de-wormed through this program, although there are at least 120,000 more who need it. An average of 8 women each are able to have an ultrasound and 15 women each week are having pap smears.
Two rooms of the clinic are set as a maternity area and the clinical officer and nurse, with the help of a local gynecologist on problems deliveries, are now delivering babies. Every month an average of 29 babies are delivered at the clinic. Some patients travel as far as 75km to come to the clinic.
An average of 85 people are seen daily, mostly children and women, but also some men.
Approximately 54 patients each week receive dental treatment, mostly extractions and fillings. An average of 55 patients receive lab testing each week. The most common
medical problems are typhoid, malaria, gynecological conditions, Pneumonia, Urinary tract infections, Skin infections, parasites and dental related conditions.
Malaria is the leading killer disease especially among children in Kenya. Many lives can be saved by the use of mosquito net. Unfortunate many families cannot raise $ 8 for a single mosquito net. 2- 4 children can use one net because in Kenya most families have only one bed.
